Love me Kosher

Museum Dorotheergasse

To a different degree than in other religions, love and sexuality take on an essential role in Judaism. The fact that the beginning of life requires an interpersonal relationship is already proclaimed in the Torah: “God blessed Adam and Eve and said to them: ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.’” Sexuality, therefore, is a natural part of life. It is considered a duty for both partners to feel happiness thereby. Jewish scriptures see a fulfilled sex life as a prerequisite for a happy marriage.

Starting from the paradisiacal state after the creation of the world, through the contemplation of love and sexuality in the Tanakh, the role of the shadchan (matchmaker), to the sociologist and sex therapist Ruth Westheimer, the exhibition deals with the discussions in modern Judaism on partnership and LGBTIQ issues. Love Me Kosher presents insights into a sensual and blissful world using exciting objects from the collections of the Jewish Museum Vienna and loans from various national and international institutions.
