This year marks the 50th anniversary of the terrorist attack on the Israeli team at the Munich Olympics in 1972, which killed 12 people. In 2022, the Jewish Museum Munich, together with the Munich Documentation Centre for the History of National Socialism, has commemorated one victim every month with the “Twelve Months – Twelve Names” event series. In December, the wrestling trainer Muni (Moshe) Weinberg, whose family history is linked to Styria and Vienna, is remembered. On this occasion, the Jewish Museum Vienna and the Center for Jewish Studies at the Karl-Franzens-University Graz are participating in the commemoration, holding one event each in cooperation with the Graz Museum.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the participation of Jewish athletes in the Olympics had been a politicized topic. The events of Munich in 1972 have a long prehistory that is also located in Austria. In a lecture, Georg Spitaler will address the relationship between Jewish sport and the Olympic Games, with an emphasis on debates and key events connected with Vienna. Afterwards, Barbara Staudinger and the artist Nina Prader will talk about the graphic novel “The Wrestlers” (“Die Ringenden”), which was specifically created for this occasion. Researched, drawn and written by Nina Prader, the commemorative publication is based on interviews with scholars and contemporary witnesses and transmits the culture of remembrance into a new medium.

Nina Prader is an artist, writer and curator. She studied at the Museum School of Fine Arts, Boston and received her MA in Critical Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Her work focuses on independent publications such as art books and magazines, as well as on issues of social justice related to community, education and art.
Georg Spitaler is a political scientist at the Association for the History of the Labor Movement (VGA) and teaches at the University of Vienna. In addition to the history of workers and political theory, his research centers on political issues in sports. He is the author of numerous publications on Jewish sport in Vienna.

The graphic novel can be read in the Jewish Museum Vienna and purchased in our shop.
