“Chanukka Sameach,” the Jewish Museum Vienna’s new digital exhibition, is the second one released this autumn. The virtual show on Google Arts & Culture is dedicated to the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, celebrated this year from November 28th to December 6th. Objects and customs related to Hanukkah
The digital exhibition presents eight Hanukkia (candelabras) from the Jewish Museum Vienna collection. With their help, the meaning of Hanukkah and the customs of the festival are explained. Dating from the 18th to the 20th century, the Hanukkia originate from different cities and countries, for instance, Jerusalem, Vienna, Amsterdam and the USA.
While several of the candelabras are showcased in the museum’s Visual Storage on Dorotheergasse, others are not on permanent display. With “Chanukka Sameach,” another online exhibition has succeeded in providing visitors access to these objects as well. Moreover, thanks to the high image quality, the Hannukiah can be viewed very close up.
Director Danielle Spera adds: “Especially because it is not possible for our visitors to come to us due to the current COVID measures, we would like to bring our exhibitions and collections home to them. But this also marks a further step in the implementation of our digital museum strategy. With projects like these, we can make our unique collection even better accessible and visible beyond the museum space.”
