Hanukkah: 8 days – 8 stories

Hanukkah is celebrated on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev, which varies every year from late November to December. The festival, which celebrates the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple after the Maccabees defeated the Seleucids, falls at the time of the winter solstice and is also a festival of lights. The miracle of lights refers to the cruse of oil for the menorah, which, although too little, miraculously lasted eight days. Games, treats, and gifts have made Hanukkah into a family festival celebrated all over the world since the 19th century.
 
As a festival of resistance, a festival of self-assertion, as well as a festival of assimilation, Hanukkah has numerous aspects and many stories. Over the eight days of the festival, staff members of the Jewish Museum Vienna will tell eight stories about Jewish identities using objects from the museum’s collection.
